Random QOTD: What do you typically eat for breakfast?

  • Andrew Berardinucci 5年 ago

@Kinetic Kennons also another way to learn spanish is to listen to the radio. Especially when locals call and interacs with the host. A great show is el cepy boy la bandas 93.3 de monterrey, you will also get a sens of mexican humor. Btw, i'm coming to Vallarta in January, how's the weather around the 2 second week?

such great advice. I'm going to start working on learning Spanish. It will make me feel like I'm heading toward my goal of moving to PV.

I agree with you about being extroverted in the language. I travel a lot through Spain and I go to small villages just because there I can talk with the villagers, who are usually older people and have time to talk. One thing you didn't mention about learning a foreign language is age. I learned Spanish when I was about twenty and Brazilian Portuguese when I was in my late twenties. Once you are past that age it is very difficult to imitate the accent. The language learning part of your brain has basically shut down and solidified. If you are a retired American in your sixties or seventies you can learn the grammar and some of the vocabulary but you will probably never gain fluency or have a good accent in the language you are learning. For example, I learned Brazilian Portuguese by marrying a Brazilian and living in Brazil for twenty years but when we arrived in Portugal it was almost a new language. The intonation and the pronunciation were very different. I have been here for almost thirty years now and although people say I have good grammar I can not lose that American/Brazilian accent nor perhaps do I want to. My Brazilian wife has never lost her own accent. I think though that part of the problem here is that we were never able to identify with the Portuguese culture as we had in Brazil and we found Continental Portuguese less pleasing to the ears than Brazilian Portuguese. It would be like an American moving to Glasgow and trying to speak Glaswegian or a Californian moving to the hills of West Virginia and trying to fit in. Not easy.

As a beginner, I find the Netflix shows still beyond my grasp. They talk way too fast and my vocabulary is limited. I need something between Duolingo and Netflix.

Hi Hil & Greg, Hey, who is the author of the Alter Ego book? There are quite a few books out there with that title. Sounds so interesting. Thanks for all the wonderful information you both provide!

    Goyo,

I also watch "La Casa de Papel" without fail. I also watch it with Spanish subtitles. By also have my cell phone handy so I can google what they are saying, because sometimes I just can't make heads or tails of what these fast-talking, slang-slinging Spaniards are saying…. And I was born speaking Spanish…

Mexicans and Spaniards are two people separated by a common language…

Hi from Odessa Texas. How do ya make money do ya have regular Jobs in Mexico or do ya work from home online?

I definitely agree with your advice for learning Spanish. I watch YouTube videos in Spanish to help me practice my listening skills. It is interesting that you prefer Spain-Spanish movies where as I prefer Mexican made movies. I grew up learning Castilian (Madrid Spanish) in school, but for some reason I can understand Mexican Spanish conversation better.

Hey Greg! you might have heard well. It is a word game: Camarones "emVARAzados". The word for impregnated is "embarazada". However, the shrimp are on a stick, which is "vara" in Spanish. These camarones "emVARAzados" are marinated and grilled on a stick. Delicious.

    Great advice to use Netflix.
My wife (native speaker) and I are currently watching Bolivar
With Spanish subtitles. I highly recommend it

i agree with what you're saying about making learning fun, producing the language as much as possible in random conversations on the street BUT I believe that for beginners it's a good idea to go to class to get a good orientation on tenses, syntax (word order), and lots of other things that aren't easy to pick up in casual conversations.

Just remember don't go to puebla

  • Jesse Munoz 5年 ago

“Pescados envarizados!” Ok Greg….you are getting to pick even ‘Native’ slang. That’s a hard one to pick: “Pescados Envarizados”. That basically means: “fish on a stick” or “Pescados en vara”. Vara=Stick. Pescados envarizados.

Greg….you guys are on the way to speak as natives….órale!

A mis Güeros favoritos…es cierto! Esa es la mejor manera de aprender Español. Y aquí les dejo esta palabra que se puede usar de diferentes maneras and it always has different meaning. It all depends on the sound you give it and according to the situation. Todo depende del acento que le des!

If you want to learn Spanish or any other language, you must practice Spanish (or the language that you want to learn) EVERYDAY. Read, write and speak Spanish (or the language that you want to learn) everyday!
